AWARDS
On 15 September 2006 Opatija was awarded the Silver Flower of Europe in the cities category at the award ceremony in Bad Säckingen, Germany.
In the villages category, Croatia was represented by Skradinski Buk, which was awarded the Bronze Flower.
Out of 27,000 original entrants, the final competition for the Gold, Silver and Bronze Flower involved 12 cities and 12 villages from Austria, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, France, Ireland, Italy, Hungary, The Netherlands, Germany, Slovenia and Great Britain. Croatia was the only country in the competition that is not a part of the European Union.
All entrants were visited between 16 July and 4 August 2006 by an international jury from the European Association for Flowers and Landscape (AEFP), made up of 12 members, one from each competitor country. Their consideration covered flower and park areas, cleanness of the location, the appearance of gardens around both residential and business properties, ecological awareness, etc.
